ADVANCED SETTINGS - Display Options, Smart Zoom, etc

The Advanced Settings introduces some special extra settings and special functions. They're divided into

• Display Options
• Smart Zoom
• User Data Management
• Route options

1.    Display Options

These settings determine how your GPS displays different content elements or how it present the screens.

2D in Map mode (and North-up orientation)

You will normally use Map mode to browse the map and look for different places on it. This is normally done in a top-down view with the top of the map facing North. You can also set your map to be North facing in Cockpit mode.

With 2D in Map mode turned on, Map mode will always open in 2D with North-up orientation for map browsing purposes.

You can still rotate and tilt your map, but the map will always return to 2D mode whenever Map mode is started.

3D in Cockpit mode (and track-up orientation - ie  looking at the road ahead through your windscreen)

You will usually use Cockpit mode when cruising or navigating, where the road in front of the driver is the most important part of the map.This is usually done in a 3D view with your current direction towards the top of the map. The same map visual is used in Map mode.

Turn on 3D in Cockpit mode and your GPS will always open in Cockpit mode with Track-up orientation and automatic map rotation for driving purposes - with your location at the blue arrow mid-screen at the bottom.

Zoom in after find

With Zoom in after find turned ON, your GPS will centre the map to the location selected in Find, and will zoom in to the selected point. When turned OFF, it will still centre your map to the location selected in Find, but it will not change the zoom level.

The zoom level depends on the type of object you are searching for. In the case of a city search, the zoom level will show you the whole city or at elast a significant area around the city centre. For a POI, street intersection or an exact address, it will zoom to give you a closer look at the streets on the display around that location.

Coordinate display format

Your selected positions are sometimes displayed with their street addresses, and sometimes with their coordinates. Use this setting to choose between displaying your coordiantes in

1. degrees  (dd.dddddd)
2. degrees and minutes (dd mm.mmm)
3. degrees, minutes & seconds

Coordiante display mode is independent from the coordiante input screen in the Find menu. You can use all three formats freely on the coordinate input screen.

Travel & Route Data

This content is fixed in Cruise mode (when you have not set an active route), where it will show present speed, current speed limit and the time of day.

But for the display when you're in navigation you can use these settings to change what is displayed on your Screen.

Top field:  select from 

1. Distance to destination  (default value)
2. Time to destination
3. Distance to next Via point
4. Time to next manouvre
5. Speed
6. Speed limit (warning - urban speed data is incomplete so please don't rely on this)
7. Arrival at next Via point
8. Arrival at destination

Middle field: select from

5. Arrival at next Via point
6. Time to next manouvre

1. Speed

2.     Smart Zoom

Smart Zoom is a lot more than just the usual automatic zoom. To turn on, tap the Smart Zoom panel.

When Smart Zoom is turned on and you're navigating a route, as you approach a turn it will zoom in and raise the viewing angle, giving a 3D view so you can easily see your next manouvre. If your next turn is then a distance away, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to flat so you can see the road in front of you.

While cruising, if you haven't confirmed an active route and are just driving, Smart Zoom will zoom in if you slow down, and zoom out (to the distance limits you've set on the slider) when speed up

Use the sliders to set your Zoom-in and Zoom-out limits 

It can even switch into Overview mode which lets you follow your position on the road - complete with a graduated scale measure (in Cockpit View - this looks a bit like a thermometer) that shows on the screen indicating the distance to your next manouvre. Again - to turn on tap the panel so the white line shows, and use the sliders to set your preferred distances.

Restore Lock-to-Position and Restore Smart Zoom

You can move, rotate, tilt and zoom your map during navigation (set from inside the Cockpit map by tapping Menu / Route and turning on Zoom & Tilt). When you do, if the two Restore... buttons are ON,  which case a Lock icon appears on the screen.

When you tilt or zoom a map, that part of Smart Zoom is automatically deactivated. The map will still follow your position, but not change the view parameter you have modified. If you move the map (in the Cockpit screen), all parts of Smart Zoom are deactived, and the view freezes.

In both cases you can tap the Follow button on the map page restore your Lock-to-Position and Smart Zoom and return to the status quo.

Turning Restore Lock-to-Position and Restore Smart Zoom ON in these settings means it happens automatically after whatever time delay you've set using the slider. Consider it as 'set and forget' - but you must have have the Smart Zoom setting turned ON  to enable these two.
